Riverside Council PTA Unit Presidents:

First, I just want to greet you by saying, "Welcome to the 2017-2018 school year!"
I hope you have either enjoyed your summer vacation, are in the process of enjoying your vacation, or are about to commence enjoying some sort of a summer break! We all need and deserve a break before we hit the ground running into a new and exciting school year!

I do not want to bother those of you still vacationing (so no pressure) but now that I am back from my own getaway, I wanted to get some of this information out to you as soon as possible. Please take the time to read the information below, as it is full of details that may prove valuable to you and your PTA/PTSA board.

Support Team
I know that for some of you, this is your first time as a unit PTA president and you may just be getting your feet planted on the ground. For others, you may be in the process of passing the torch to your successors, or continuing the efforts and groundwork made last year. I want all of you to know that I am committed to supporting you in anyway possible throughout my term as your Riverside Council President for the next two years. As your first in-line, direct resource for your board position, please do not hesitate to call, text, or email me with any questions that you may have. My personal cell number is listed below my signature on this message.

Your board members will also have a team of multiple sources to reach out to when they have questions. Each position on your board will have a direct position counterpart on the Council E-Board, that can help with position specific issues and questions. Additionally, Feeder-school or 'Clusters' will have a liaison assigned to them to help serve their needs. Take advantage of the support team available to you. We are here to help!

Executive Board contact info is due! If you have not yet already entered your 2017-2018 E-Board's contact info - please log onto right away and complete this task. This is one of the first presidential tasks necessary to be completed at the start of the new term. Each new unit president has their own login name and password. If you are unsure whether your board is already entered, check with your outgoing presidents, as some may have entered this information prior to leaving their office. Units without PTA-EZ info will also be contacted in the coming days, with reminders and support offerings.

I have administrative access to PTA-EZ and can now reset your log-in and password if needed. If you are a unit president and need access to your unit - please contact me and I will help you get your log-in and temporary passwords set up.

Monthly Meetings
A schedule of all of our monthly meetings is attached. Please calendar these meetings as soon as possible.
Our first general Association meeting of all unit PTA/PTSA Presidents and the Council Board will be on Wednesday, August 16th at 9:00am at the RUSD Family Resource Center, Portable B6, 6735 Magnolia Avenue, Riverside, CA 92506.

Prior to the meeting, you will receive via email all materials needed, as well as instructions on what to bring. Please keep an eye on your email, as this will be our primary mode of communication.

Summer Leadership Training
Attached you will find the advertisement flyer and registration form for the upcoming 2017 Summer Leadership Conference (SLC) and Training. This year, the 23rd District PTA and Riverside Council PTA are collaborating their efforts to bring you an exciting and comprehensive training opportunity for your entire board! The SLC will take place on Saturday, August 12th from 8:30am - 1:30pm at Arlington High School. Please refer to the flyer for more information. The first General Association Meeting of the 23rd District PTA (all of Riverside County) will take place during the Conference. Please be advised that the deadline to register at the early-bird cost of only $10 is July 28th

There will be the usual core officer training workshops offered, a lunch-time general financial training course, and a second session with valuable and fun classes to choose from such as an Advocacy for beginners, Reflections Awards, Parent Engagement, Getting to Know RUSD, How to use PTA-EZ, and more! Attending this training will count as your once-per-year required maintenance training for all board officers.

Lastly, if you are receiving this email, and you are an outgoing president, please forward this email to the new unit president. As soon as I have the contact info for all incoming boards, I will leave the past presidents alone and you will stop getting my emails - promise! 😉👍

Again, please stay tuned for more email information as it becomes available. Future emails will not be this long or comprehensive.  Please also take advantage of our Facebook page and website to stay up-to-date on the latest information!

Riverside Council PTA Position: RUSD Measure O School Bond

posted Sep 28, 2016, 3:27 PM by Adriana Katanić-Curiel   [ updated Sep 28, 2016, 3:27 PM ]

Dear PTA Members of Riverside Unified School District,

On Wednesday, August 17, 2016 the Riverside Council PTA Association voted to support RUSD's school bond measure known as Measure O. What this means is that all of Riverside Council PTA and it's members may now formally endorse this measure. Additionally, your local school PTA unit may elect to endorse the measure as a group, although it is not necessary for your organization to do so. You may individually endorse, support, promote, or volunteer for this campaign.

Advocating for the care and protection of children and youth is the core value of which PTA was founded upon. PTA's advocacy goals are "to represent, inform and mobilize members and the public to advocate for the education, health, safety and well-being of all children." As the oldest and largest advocacy organization, PTA is uniquely qualified to influence policymakers, and by working collaboratively on issues, we can form a powerful force in securing adequate laws and public policy.

As a reminder, the California State PTA's Nonpartisan Policy states that:

PTA must never support or oppose political parties or candidates, including those running for school boards on nonpartisan slates. However, PTA may adopt a position expressing its support for or opposition to issues dealing with the health, safety, education, or general well-being of children and youth. One of the main Purposes of PTA is “to secure adequate laws for the care and protection of children and youth.” By educating its members – and through them, the general public – on issues affecting children and youth, PTAs can best influence the course of action of those who make policy decisions, thereby achieving the Purposes of the PTA.

PTA units may be involved in legislative activities:

·        By supporting or opposing local issues that affect children or services to children in their respective communities based upon a study of the issue and a vote of the association; and

·        By supporting California State PTA positions on legislation needed to achieve the Purposes of the PTA.

The Measure O campaign committee is made up of many parents, RUSD staff members, and teachers who donate their time towards this very important local cause. We are in great need of volunteers to help spread the word and educate our community on this important issue. If you are interested in participating, you may sign up for a shift that has been designated for your school, but walk-ins are also welcome!

Phone banks are going on now, Monday through Thursday evenings at the headquarters in downtown Riverside. The address is: 3775 Tenth Street, Riverside (RRC Architecture, next to City Hall).

Volunteers are given all of the information needed to answer questions they may be asked, and do not have to make any "cold calls". There is no persuasive speaking required; rather all calls are scripted, and are made to known supporters, simply reminding them to look for Measure O on their ballot this November. High School students are also encouraged to volunteer. Not only can they earn volunteer hours, but this is a great opportunity to acquire experience in leadership and local grassroots organization.

For more information about Measure O, to sign up to volunteer, or to see your local school's volunteer schedule, please visit:

Information is also attached to this email in both English and Spanish.

For a list of endorsements, please visit:

If you have any questions, please contact Campaign Manager Jared McCreary at:, or 951-809-6598, or Grassroots Coordinator Susan Sweica at:

We would like to remind all parents in the community to please vote this November, and to look especially for the Measure O on your ballot. Since it is a presidential election year, Measure O will be located at the very end of this year's long ballot. Local ballot items affect our community usually quicker, and with a greater impact than the "big ticket" items, therefore we encourage you to take the time to give special attention to Measure O and other local initiatives. Election Day is November 8. To pass, Measure O must receive 55% support. All registered voters in the Riverside Unified School District are eligible to vote on Measure O. The deadline to register to vote in this election is October 24. To register to vote, please visit:

Please feel free to forward this email to all of your PTA leaders and association members at your respective schools.  Thank you in advance for your time and consideration.

Cheers to doing good things for our kids, and schools!

Walk to End Homelessness

posted Mar 25, 2016, 2:25 PM by Adriana Katanić-Curiel   [ updated Mar 25, 2016, 2:27 PM ]

Hello PTA Leaders,

On April 2 the City of Riverside is hosting the 3rd Annual Walk to End Homelessness.  This event provides great opportunity to us as parents and community members.

1.) Kids under the age of 18 cost just $5 to participate and the experience they will get in participating in a city-wide event and change lives is priceless.

2.) This is a great way to wear our PTA status proudly, by wearing your school organization or PTA shirt proudly. By us showing up, we are showing we care about the entire child and family - not just what happens to them at school.

3.) By our example in participating, our kids and community see that we have compassion for everyone.  The face of homelessness is not always what we think.  It is a family that has lost a job, a family escaping domestic violence, an 18 year old foster student that has aged out of care.

How can you help?

1.)  Register online ( or the day of and participate.

2.) Share this info with other parent groups/boosters on your campus

3.) Like the City of Riverside Facebook page and share when you see information on this event.

We already love where we live - right?  Why not make it even better!

Contact Sandy Ramirez at or 951-312-4031 if you need more info.

Thank you,

Exciting Changes Happening in Education!

Just a friendly reminder that the 10th and final stop of the LCAP tour around Riverside is this coming MondayFebruary 24th at 6:30pm in the Poly High School Library! Don't miss out on this opportunity to listen or share your own ideas about what RUSD can do to help ALL students be more successful! It will be a town hall type open forum designed to answer the big picture question: What would MOST help ALL students in RUSD to be successful?

This is not just for Poly families, but to all schools and stakeholder groups in the city! If you live, or work in the city - you are a stakeholder whether or not you have kids in RUSD. All views and ideas are valued and appreciated! RUSD is working hard to ensure that the future of our schools, and the impact that our local education plan makes on the community heads in the right direction!

For more information regarding the Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP) and the Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF) - please visit RUSD link below!

We hope to see you all there and are looking forward to your great ideas about the future of education in our community!
